Module 1-“Circles of Connection - Inclusion and the Early Years Learning Framework

Workshop Overview

The 2017 Northcott Preschool Disability Support Program workshop will focus on looking more deeply at the concept and process of “inclusion” in relation to the EYLF principles, practices and outcomes. During a day-long interactive workshop participants will be encouraged to question their current understandings of inclusion and the processes through which they facilitate and document the inclusion of young children with additional needs. New research will be shared that shows how sometimes well-meaning and tried and true strategies can be counterproductive to genuine inclusion. Some policy frameworks and resources that facilitate and mandate inclusion will be reviewed. There will be a focus on the development and maintenance of meaningful, yet manageable individual programmes. The socio-culturally informed concepts of “Intentional Teaching” and “Funds of Knowledge” will be discussed with a view to their use to inform genuine inclusion in early childhood centres.

During the day, participants will be given opportunities to examine their current processes and practices when viewed through the lens of the information presented, culminating in the development of a resource for all participants to share. Time will be given during the workshop for the review of current documentation practices and the development of new ideas.
